☆ Do you really want to become an artist? ☆

So you have Deviantart account, I assumed you want to be an artist, do you? or you're not? how many of you seriously want to become a professional artist or is drawing just a hobby? I love art, no doubts but it's just a hobby. I never wanted to be in this industry, I went to Art School because I have no other choice because of my math! I wanted to be an architect or archeologist but sadly no one guide me in that time! but Somehow I felt like I'm following the right path, and I am glad I'm not good at math! <3

Life is unexpected.
What about you guys?

Your doing, exactly, what I wanted to do since middle school. Math is my worst subject by far and because its such a crucial skill to have it causes limitation. Now I'm limited even more that the parentals are saying I must take up something else. I wish I had the happy accident you had in finding your art carrer and really, I dont say I like peoples art often. ( I have a perfection ocd in artworks) an I really enjoy your art and am happy that you ended up in this wonderful world of creativity. :) I'll be searching the shelves to find your works

I wanted to be an artist when I was younger, but then decided to go for math and computers instead, have never regretted it : ) I'm happier with art being just a hobby without pressures.

Always was interested in art since I was little, but never figured to be in the art track for possible careers.
But one high school started and I enrolled into an art school, I'm highly considering art in my career and also going to an art college or an IV league with a good art program.

Art teacher first, to get my pay steady. Then to create an art academy in Korea. That is my goal.

Of course, with minor or major bumps in between.

Wow, I'm just like you. I'm bad at math, and I want to be an archeologist b/c I LOVE culture and history, and my dad's an architect so naturally I was interested in the field. I love to draw, but I have a loooong way to go. I'm going for physical therapy at the moment. There is some math...but in the real job it's not used as much. Architects use more geometry than algebra, and geometry is actually a forte of mine and I enjoy it...but algebra KILLS me. But that's great that you feel that your heading in the right direction! ^^

I love art, I don't want it to just be a hobby, but so far it seems like that's all it's going to be.
I'm an A+ student in all my classes, so my parents have high hopes for me. They want me to be a lawyer or a doctor, something like that where I earn a lot of money. I even considered maybe I'll settle for a lawyer (no way can I handle being a doctor cutting up people and such :dead:), since I don't know what I want to do with my life. But then I discovered deviantART, and my artistic abilities have improved since then. My friends all root for me to become an artist. I really want to become a Graphic Designer where I'm basically my own boss (I don't like taking orders :P) or an Illustrator, but my dad says I'll have no money and starve :( I don't want to pursue something if I know that my parents won't support me...

Drawing is only a hobby for me. I'd love to be an artist. Where I live I am considered "The artist".

Hm. I'm working to be illustrator or comic maker. Art ever was a hobby for me, now I'm taking the theme seriously. Some events lately put me in the right path too. xD
I'm not good at math either, haha, but I'm happy with this.

One of my old boyfriends wanted to be an artist, so I expected him to rock at drawing. One day I let him come into my room and I had my pics all over the wall and he started talking about how unique and different I was. Turns out he only told me he was an artist because he knew I'd like him more. I got a thing for those artistic boys! My parents have always told me I could do anything I wanted with my odd talent, so I sculpt, paint, draw, sew, all that stuff. and I dont have to get paid for it, just as long as it makes me a happy person. I'll go get a job and be yelled at them come home to draw a masterpiece on my wall! And that hunny, is an artist. someone who can make it happen without any label. so dont worry about it. youre already an artist!

Up until a year ago, I never imagined art even being in my life. If there was an art class offered at our school, I didn't take it. I just wasn't interested.

Then I discovered anime. Of course, my initial attempts were utter crap, but my friend lied through her teeth and told me I had a real talent. That kept me going. My father gave me harsh, but helpful criticism. That got me better.

But I only wanted to be a writer!!

It wasn't until I got my first check for my first commision that I finally realized that art was something I was good at and that people actually liked it. My friend wasn't lying through her teeth anymore.

Then I got a dA and I saw all the pretty pictures.

That made me start writing again.

So...long story short? I have no idea what I want to do. xD

I love art. It's the one thing that my brother taught me that kept me going and let me explore new worlds. It's also the one thing I can be proud to call as my talent. ; v ; I plan to go to an art collage since I seriously would love to see more of this world I love of art.

I was in that situation, I really had nothing but art that I was good at but it pissed me off that I wasn't good at math lol I had basic high school math when I went into college. Even though no one guided me I pushed myself to find a field which would help my artistic side. I am now heading to Marketing & Advertizing in university and I need maths for that so I enrolled in math courses during the summer and scored 90s just by pushing myself.

I think you could do the same, doesn't matter if there are people to guide you or not. We're humans and the thing we do best is adapt. So it's up to you to adapt to your situation and make the best of it. I know it sounds wierd but Mother Teresa said "Don't wait for leaders. Do it alone, person to person." So why wait for a leader when you can push yourself into becoming your own leader.

Apart from that I always thought that if you use the thing you love the most to make money then it might not feel the same as it did before you relied on it. Even if I make it into Marketing and Advertizement I don't plan on being the person responsible for the creative team I plan on being part of the research team who reaches out to the creative designers and give them projects.

I've always wanted to be involved in the Arts, my problem is choosing which one! I think that's because for me art is a compulsion, but as for a career in the arts, that's more than a dream, less than a reality at the moment!

*LOL* I'm the same, not good at math.

I don't know I wanna be artist or not even my current career is related to design
I just enjoy keep doing it and already forgot about being artist.
I'm just a kind of good worker, I think *LOL* XD

but Manga, illustration and Doujin are still my hobby. May b'cuz I so much enjoy doing
fanart currently and still don't have my own content about original yet so I'll keep them as hobby this time.
At least it balance my life with my career

My reason for choosing animation is the same. I suck at math, so I had no hope of being a biologist.

I have been drawing for all my life....the problem for me is I jumped into graphic designs also. You think that would be a good thing learning photoshop and all other adobe products but having so much knowledge isn't worth anything if your not making enough on both sides. I draw and I'm really good at it, and color and I'm really good at it but I also do graphic designs and I'm really good at that suff too.
The only choice I have is what will bring me money comix..or..graphic designs?

together with music gives me inspiration. Especially making

I'm the complete opposite. I thought often about a life as a professional artist, but then I changed my mind. I was never good at math ether, but I wanted to be! So I decided to become good at it, because it would be the ultimate challenge for me. Now I'm in second semester of aerospace engineering at Stuttgart university in Germany. I don't know if this is what I want to do for life. I'm still finding out. I'm absolutely proud of managing math so far. I've got almost no time for my hobby art, which is sad for me, but I think it was the best decision to try.
I think I would have bitten my ass my whole life, if I hadn't tried.
I'm not saying you made a mistake in not trying. Everyone knows him/herself best, so it's their decision to make.
I hope for you just as much as for myself, that we both made the right decision!
I wish you a great and happy future!!

well, i'm a law student and i don't draw but i like to write. But to me art, in all its forms, more than a profession, that most of the members of this webside practice, it's a natural form of expression regardless of your profesional tendencies. With this i'm not discriminating this noble and beautiful practice, on the contrary, i admire it. Art, its a way of living that goes beyond paper, pencil or other material form. I do admire the persons that dedicate their lives to this way of living and i believe that thanks to them or to you the world has more color. The artists shape the world of imagination, explore every corner of what is possible and impossible. Art, and those who dedicete their lives and spirits to it, has been underestimated by others sectors of the population and i think they do not realize the influence and importance of art, in all its tendencies.

okay It depends of each one and I'm was thinking to be architect too! ,phylosopher or civil enginier lol .By the way the arquitecture is more technique picture you use a lot time rules, mini rules, big rules and of course a loth math ! (i am bad on math too but in see the volume of triangles, squars, rectangles i am good, the circles sick me x.x) I get a lot fun doing that with some exercises of Cartesian plane and I like do them x3 like the volume of the figure and that stuff. But i don't know if I can survive in that industry :( and architecture is an art too,I think your not leaving the art,you are doing other kind of art.
in my personal way I have the same dobut as you xDDDDDDD and well I think i can't survive as an arquitecta lot zombies as company because I know a guy who want to be architect but he is very boring I think I will be animator or in art clases in a case if I don't like well I don't think i'm to old to study other career xD

Not to sound corny, but it was what i was born to do. even though i haven't got a career in art yet(since I'm still in school) i know I'm going to be an artist. :D plus your art is INSPIRING. And what i love about a career in art is that you are always getting better and learning new techniques and for me art is all about enjoying what you doing, being creative and improving.

But hey thats just me :D

I thought I wanted to go career, but I've found I really hate it. It sucks the life out of my creativity. People expect free work and play games with how they pay me. The pro path is npot for you if you love to be creative on your own people. If you have a project or characters, or something of your own that you want to make into something, then find something else to do as a profession because pro ISN'T the path to it, trust me.

I have been screwed up and down, and side to side by people. I have spent hours backlogged with work I didn't like or care about wishing to got for one fucking hour where my creativity hadn't completely run dry so that I could do my own work for once.

I realized this and changed careers. I'm a certified English as a Foreign Language teacher now. The problem is, The pro art stuff follows you. I have clients who cry me a river of guilt when I even make the slightest mention that I want to quit or be paid what I'm worth. It's tough to say no and that goes especially for when you are still willing to take some pro work. The problem is, what seems like a small, easy project turns into a nightmare because you are nit-picked to death and jerked around. what is supposed to take a week tops often turns into months with you still getting paid as if it were a week.

So yes, my advice, work for yourself on art if you have anything you love about it. If you are passionate about it, do it for you, not for the man. Then, enterprise off of what you created if you can.

I will tell you all that finding another career that opens me up to just doing my art for me has lifted an unimaginable weight from my shoulders even with the straggling hanger-on clients I still have suckling at me. It's the way to go.

I am a professional hobby artist. FTW XD

Well, I'm currently going to CCS, an art school and majoring in entertainment arts(animation) and illustration as a minor. :) I used to love crafts when I was younger and then when I became a teenager I became interested in drawing and a few years into teens I knew I wanted to do art for a career. :) So I've always been creative but only in the last 10-ish I really started loving to drawing and wanting to do it for a living. At first I wanted to be an archietect...but I don't really like math and at the time that was the only art-ish job I knew about, then I discovered graphic design and then finally entertainment arts/illustration. lol

You just got to do what works for you. You don't have to go to art school to do art. Take my brother for example he got a math degree and now he does art at Ubisoft when they start up their Toronto studio later this year. No matter what you do a higher education at college or university goes a long way it is part of the reason that my brother was hired at Rockstar over others.
For me I am good at history, English, Art, but I also got an 86 in U/C math in grade 11 getting a 89 on the exam even though I got a 64 last year.
Being a starving artist sucks period. Better to go get an education in another field that allows you to have the money to support yourself and do art as a side business. But historically artists have never been that rich just look at Vincent van Gogh and numerous other artists. It is just practical to do art on the side and have a degree or diploma in a field that you can get a job to support yourself and your art hobby.

I have been drawing since I was 4 and it has always been my dream to become a professional artist. Most people my age want to become doctors, lawyers, accountants and many other professions which most parents would want their children to pursue....But to me, art is a part of me and I really can't imagine doing something other than that...I am now in my final year of secondary school and am going to sit for a very major exam this year end...I am in the science stream but I take fine arts as my extra subject...There are times when my decision of becoming an artist wavered because of peer pressure...because everyone wanted to become this and that and all I wanted to do was to pursue art..when I began to like anime I realized that I wanted to become an animator too, to bring my works to life , to entertain people from all around the world with my works...I am very lucky that I have supportive parents and teachers who tell me to go for it because this is what I love to do, and I feel that you should follow your heart too :)

I have the exact same thought, i mean i love to draw and i would love to just keep improving, and i think i will, but everytime someone sees my art, and im talking about friends of my parents and such, they always says "Wow you are good, you should definitely do something about it! You are right?" and i never know what to answer them, because to me, its just a hobby, and frankly i have NO idea what to do when i "grow up", though ive always wanted to write a novel or something, and if i have time i think i will go through with it, and i havent really come as far as you have, but i think ill do some art classes, but never really do anything abuot it!:) idk^^

after 400+ comments I do not know if you are still looking at this. My brother did the art school and is still looking for work 10 years later. I myself has made much money freelancing however I am a cheif now. To hit a note my gf is now a master archeologist so I can see you passion for it. Here in Newfoundland you don't need high math for the arch degree as it's apart of the arts program ( MUN is the university) But I have seen your work you can make a living if you get the right clients, or go in the cookie cutting merchandise type industry. I love that you put up your journal like you have because it take someone who is willing to live in a slum and eat 25 cent noodles for 6 years to make it as an artist. I couldn't do it as myself so between the work I do with my other passion (cooking) I do art. I feel you just have to know how to live in two worlds and enjoy more then one thing. btw there isn't much money in archeology ether, but she is awsome at what she does, passion is happiness not cash. The way I look at it the onlything keeping you from doing what you want is you, "you have until you die to achieve your dreams." my grandfather always told me. You need to have art skill before you can be an architect and you have to have an outside view and mind for archeology... you have skills both ways.
